Native Americans are known for many different qualities they had as a part of their lifestyle. The games and sports they created to play that are now used in todayââ¬â¢s society, lacrosse being the most famous. Some of the games played in the early times are either drastically changed or no longer played. There are many different Native American tribes that factor out cultural differences and depending on the tribe, the lifestyle qualities such as sports, games, and rituals differentiate between one another. All games varied depending upon the tribal culture. Most matches were set up to play tribe versus tribe and other matches were played where villages of the same tribe challenged other villages. There were three different forms of Lacrosse based on the equipment that was used, the type of goal used, and stick handling techniques. These different forms could be found throughout many different tribes and tribal groups. The materials used in this sport were curved rackets, one ball, goal posts, and the players. The ball was generally made of either wood or buckskin. The rackets had a net on the end to hold the ball in place when running to score at the end of the field. On the other hand cardiovascular disorders are one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The study by Kivimki et al. (2002) aims to evaluate the correlation between wok related stress defined by certain models and cardiovascular mortality. The authors aim to identify different features of a workplace and work organisation that might play an important role in the occurrence of cardiovascular disorders related deaths. The study population was comprised of workers employed for at least 15 months by Valmet factories. The participants were stratified based on age sex and occupational role including mangers, office staff, skilled and semi-skilled workers. A cohort study design was utilised. The components of two different work stress models, the job strain model and the effort reward imbalance model were measured using relevant questionnaire. The cardiovascular mor tality data for each participant was obtained from Statistics Finland national mortality register. Demographic and behavioural factors were measured initially and biological factors were measured both at the beginning of the study and after a five year follow up. The relationship between the work stress variables and the biological factors were assessed statistically. The study found that there was twofold increases risk of cardiovascular mortality rate for workers with high job-strain and effort-reward imbalance, which was consistent with other similar study findings. 2.The research question: To find whether work stress as defined by the job strain as well as effort-reward imbalance model is related to risk of mortality caused due to cardiovascular disease. 3.The study design utilised by Kivimki et al. (2002) is a Cohort study where 812 employees participated (545 men and 267 women). Several personal attributes, demographic data and biological factors related to cardiovascular diseases were measured as baseline variants as well as after a 5 year and 10 year follow up. The cohort study design is appropriate in this case as it can measure the association of the selected risk factors with cardiovascular disease related mortality. Cox proportional hazard models were used for the initial assessment. Analysis of variance was used for other assessments after adjustments of the baseline values for these factors for the particular study group. SAS 8.12 statistical program package was used for the purpose of the analyses. 7.The risk factors provided in the job strain model and effort-reward imbalance model were measured by self-assessment of the employees using questionnaire. Hence, measurement of risk factors was subjective. However, the classification of cause of death of the participants followed an objective measurement provided by International Classification of Diseases (ICD). 8. Firstly, the study did not have a control group. The resulting scales for the questionnaires that determined the work stress was dived into thirds and the participants reporting to be in the most favourable third was considered to be a reference group. A lack of control group was a bias in regard to study groups. The recruitment process lack any bias as the authors tried to participants from all the occupational levels and the age, gender and employment period related biases were also avoided by adopting efficient recruitment parameters. The measurement of work stress was subjective and hence prevalence of certain bias cannot be ruled out. Although standard assessment scales were utilised a subjective measurement is always prone to bias in any study model. At a follow up study after five years systolic pressure and a serum total cholesterol concentration was measured and at a ten year follow up only body mass index was measured. All the biological parameters that were measured at baseline were not measured at the follow up which is biased from the perspective of efficient results. 9.A lack of control group, subjective stress factors measurements and lack of sufficient measurements can all lead to bias in the study finding by inaccurate association and interpretation of the causes of death. And finally, I will find out whether the means of transport you use to get to and from school have an affect on your weight. But by looking into only weight, I will not be able to compare years as age affects weight, so instead I will be looking at their BMI (body mass index). I am going to see whether: * Your gender has an affect on your BMI I think that males weigh more then females because they stop growing at a later age the females. Females go through puberty earlier then males and therefore stop growing earlier then males. Therefore, I think that males will have higher BMI then females who weigh less. * Your favourite sport has an affect on your BMI I predict that the more active your favourite sport is, the less you weigh because you burn more calories therefore less BMI. The less active your favourite sport is the more you weigh as less calories are burnt, therefore more BMI. * The number of hours spent watching T.V has an affect on your BMI The more average number of hours spent watching TV, the more you weigh because you dont need much energy to watch TV so less calories are burnt, therefore more BMI. The less number of hours you spend watching TV in a week the less you weigh, therefore less BMI. * The means of transport used has an affect on your BMI The more active yours means of transport the less you weigh. So if you walk to school you weigh less then those who get driven to school and these people will have a lower BMI. Therefore the less active yours means of transport the more you weigh, therefore high BMI. To find these relationships I am going to need a sample of pupils whose information I can use and compare. To choose which pupils information I am going to use, I will use a sampling method. This will be less time consuming because I will not have to find out about all the pupils and just the ones that have been chosen. I will take a sample of 8% of the total amount of in year 7, 8, 9 and 10. I will 1st choose a sampling method. -Random sampling ~ this where you just select individuals at random, each member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen. It is used when you have no information about the characteristics of the population. This method should be repeated a number of times to ensure that the method is random and accurate. This method would not be appropriate, because if the pupils are chosen at random, the chosen pupils may not be representative for their whole year. It may have only 2 pupils chosen from year 8 and 15 chosen from year 10, and this would not be representative. This method would also mean that my chosen sample may not be in proportion to the amount of pupils in each year or the amount of males and females in each year. -Systematic sampling ~ this is where you have a population and you select every nth person after the first person, n is chosen at random. This method is also unsuitable to choose my sample, because again the chosen sample may not be representative of their year and it may also not be in proportion to their year and other years. -Convenience sampling ~ this is where you pick lets say the 1st 50 people you meet, if you want a sample size of 50 peoples. It is a convenient form of sampling if you do not already have a population. This would not work for choosing my sample as I already have a population from which to choose the sample from, and this form of selecting a sample can be biased and unrepresentative. -Quota sampling ~ this is where you pick a sample which as far as possible reflects the whole population by having the same proportion of lets say males/females or adults/children etc. This could be used for choosing my sample, however, I have to consider the proportionalities of year groups as well as genders and so this method would not really work. -Stratified sampling ~ this is when the population is divided into groups which have something in common e.g. age. A random sample is then taken from each group. The number in each sample is proportional to the group. This method is appropriate for choosing my sample because I will be able to have the chosen sample in proportion with year group and gender. This will mean that I will have a representative number of pupils from each year, and these pupils will be of different genders depending on the amount of males and females in that year. Therefore, I will be using this method to pick out my sample group. I will be investigating each prediction by drawing out some of the followings to help me obtain some results that I can compare and support my predictions by: Frequency polygons ~ these are used to show the trend of the results obtained from continuous data. You join the mid-points of the class intervals and I can then see the value that is at the highest peak of the trend line, this would be the modal value/class. It will also be clearer to see where the results increase or decrease, and I can then see if there is a noticeable trend. I could compare the frequency polygons and see who has the lowest BMIs and who has the highest BMIs. Line graphs ~ these are also used to show the trend of the results. I can use this to show the increase or decrease of BMIs relating to different factors that may affect it. Box and whisker diagrams ~ box and whisker diagrams will highlight the quartiles and extreme values of my obtained set of data, showing me where most of the BMI values lie. The positioning of the median will tell me whether the data is positively skewed or negatively skewed. This is useful for my work as it can tell me whether most of the data is at the higher BMI values or at the lower BMI values. Box and whisker diagrams are also easier to compare which is very important for my work. Cumulative frequency graphs ~ drawing cumulative frequency graphs help to show the spread of grouped data and to find the median BMIs. I am also going to use the cumulative frequency graphs to show the interquartile ranges. This will show whether the data on each graph is widely spread about the median, which will mean that theres a variety of BMIs, or concentrated about the median, which will show that the BMIs are of similar amounts. I will be working out the: Median (middle value), form the cumulative frequency graphs to see the skewness of the data. mean so that I can compare different averages, to see which BMI value is higher or lower between 2 sets of data Working out the mean will then help me work out the standard deviation. Standard deviation will show the spread and dispersion of my data. This again will just help me compare how similar the BMIs are of 2 sets of data. Modal classes, this will show me which class of BMI contains the most number of pupils. I can see which modal class is higher and can then find out who has a higher BMI value, by comparing them. I am now going to start to investigate each of my hypotheses: * Your gender has an affect on your BMI I am going to be drawing cumulative frequency graphs, box and whisker diagrams, frequency polygons, and find the standard deviation, mean, mode and quartile ranges. I can then compare each of these graphs for males and females and see the variation and difference between the BMIs. These box and whisker diagram is for the males and females and shows their BMI range. The box and whisker diagram for males shows that the median value is closest to the upper quartile value, and therefore this data is negatively skewed. This means that most of the data is at the higher values, which shows that the males have a higher BMI. The box and whisker diagram for females. For this, the median is closest to the lower quartile value. This means that it is positively skewed, and most of the data is at the lower values, which means that the females BM values are low. This supports my predictions.
